Understand what it's like and what to do during the Christmas holidays in Chile

Chilean Christmas Traditions: How Different Are They from Brazil? Understand!

Christmas is one of the most eagerly awaited celebrations in the world, but traditions can vary greatly from one country to another. In Chile, the Christmas period is full of unique customs and practices, which reflect the rich local culture, European influences and the characteristic climate of the southern hemisphere. But is Chilean Christmas so different from what we're used to in Brazil?

In this article, we'll explore Chilean Christmas traditions, their similarities and differences to Brazil and what to do in Santiago during this period. If you're planning to visit Chile during Christmas, understanding these particularities can make your experience even more enriching and memorable.

The Christmas atmosphere in Chile: summer like in Brazil

Just like in Brazil, Christmas in Chile takes place in the middle of summer, with higher temperatures, long days and lots of sunshine. This climatic similarity greatly influences the way the celebrations are organized, with outdoor dinners, colourful decorations and refreshing drinks.

However, while Brazilians often combine the heat with tropical celebrations, Chile maintains traditions that refer to a more "classic" Christmas, with European-inspired elements such as artificial snow and decorations in traditional colors (red, green and gold).

In the streets of Chilean cities, the Christmas spirit is evident. In Santiago, for example, the local shops are filled with lights, decorations and typical music, creating a festive atmosphere that infects locals and tourists alike. Squares, shopping centers and public spaces are also decorated with Christmas trees and nativity scenes, with the famous Araucano Park standing out, which usually hosts themed events and a large illuminated tree.

Christmas dinner in Chile

Christmas dinner, or Cena de Navidad, is one of the most important moments of the Christmas celebrations in Chile. Just like in Brazil, Chilean families get together on the evening of December 24th to share a special meal and celebrate the unity and values of the date.

However, there are some marked differences in the dishes served. Among the main highlights of Chilean Christmas cuisine are:

  • Pavo Relleno: Stuffed turkey is a star of the Chilean dinner, as it is in many other countries. The stuffing usually includes minced meat, dried fruit and spices.
  • Pan de Pascua: This traditional Chilean cake, similar to the Italian panettone, is made with candied fruit, nuts and spices and is a must-have dessert at Christmas time.
  • Ensaladas Frescas: Because of the summer heat, fresh salads have a guaranteed place on the Chilean table. Mixtures of avocado, tomato and corn are especially popular.
  • Wine and sparkling wine: Chile, famous for its wines, makes a point of including local labels at Christmas dinner. Sparkling wines are also widely consumed.
  • Cola de Mono: This typical Chilean drink, made with brandy, milk, coffee, sugar and spices such as cloves and cinnamon, is compared to the traditional eggnog from the United States and is indispensable during the Christmas holidays.

Although there are similarities in the meal, the Chilean menu reflects unique flavors that make the gastronomic experience special and unforgettable for visitors.

Dias' recommendations for Christmas in Chile

Christmas in Chile, as we've already mentioned, doesn't have many different traditions from Brazil. And one of the biggest similarities you need to consider before coming to Santiago for the holidays is that on December 25th, it's common for shops to close completely.

In other words, it's important to organize yourself so that you can shop, exchange money and even go sightseeing until 24/12 - the day on which shops are usually open part-time and some restaurants offer supper for dinner.

Exchange money in advance

On the 25th, the exchange offices will be closed. Plan to exchange by the 24th. In emergencies, it is possible to exchange money at 24-hour ATMs. The one we recommend is located at Calle San Sebastian, 2814, in Las Condes.

When you arrive, you'll find an ATM outside the exchange office. Only cash is accepted and banknotes must be in good condition.

Enjoy the tours available

As we've said, it's common for shops to be open on 24/12. It's also common to find stores on the streets and in the mall, as well as supermarkets, pharmacies and restaurants. Check out some of the options:

  • Tours with Dias in Chile: On December 24th, we will only be operating two tours: the City Walk Tour and the Portillo tour. Get in touch with our team to find out about availability, the tours will take place in the morning;
  • Visit the parks: the Bicentenario, Metropolitan, MUT and Araucano parks, for example, will be open to visitors. It's a good option for those who want to relax, enjoy the scenery and the outdoors.
  • Wineries: some of Santiago's most famous wineries, such as Concha y Toro and Undurraga, are usually open on the morning of the 24th. On the 25th, they will be closed. Check tour availability.
  • Sky Costanera: the attraction will be open on December 24 and 25, but with limited hours: December 24, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; December 25, from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Shopping malls: generally, stores are closed on 25/12, but restaurants in the food court may be open. Check the schedule of the mall you want.

Choose the restaurant you want to dine in on the 24th

Christmas Eve is always accompanied by a nice dinner to celebrate the new year, right? If you're planning to spend the day in Santiago, you'll need to get organized and understand that many restaurants will be closed on this date.

On the other hand, there are some restaurants that remain open and even have exclusive Christmas programs. We at Dias en Chile have listed a few restaurants that we recommend will be open for Christmas dinner:

  • Tramonto Restaurant: located on the rooftop of the 5-star NOI Hotel in Vitacura. The establishment has open bookings for Christmas, with special menus for supper. Check out all the information here
  • Santiago Marriott Hotel: another hotel option that will have an exclusive dinner for guests and non-guests. For more information, click here
  • Hotel Intercontinental: another hotel offering a complete Christmas dinner, with an exclusive Christmas dinner menu. For more information, see this link.
  • Sheraton Hotel: with reservation required and limited seating, the Sheraton Santiago offers a family supper. See more details.

These options are only available for dinner on 24/12.

Options open every day

We've listed some of our favorite restaurants and venues in Santiago that, as luck would have it, will remain open on the 24th for lunch and dinner, as well as on the 25th. It's important to note that, as most of the capital's establishments will be closed on this date, it's essential to contact them and book your table in advance.

  • Baco Bistro y Bar: open every day. With an excellent wine menu and varied options, the variety is sure to please all tastes. But it's important to note: it's a busy place, so book in advance here! It's important to remember that their menu won't change for supper, but it's a great low-cost option for those who want to spend Christmas in Santiago.
  • Patio Bellavista: with plenty of restaurants for everyone, this is another option that will be open every day! Apart from the food, it's also a great place to spend time and learn more about Santiago's culture.

It's important to note that some small shops and neighborhood markets may be open on the 25th, but it's not common to find large chains in operation. So always organize in advance to enjoy the holiday without any headaches!

After all, whether it's savoring a Pan de Pascua, watching a Christmas parade or admiring the decorations in the streets of Santiago after supper, Christmas in Chile is full of magical moments that enchant tourists from all over the world.
